Our team of developers and designers has been working closely on new functions for the past 2 years, renewed the interface design for both mobile and web application, and provided solutions to user’s pain points.

The challenge

First of all, it was a completely new sector for the team. It took us a while to learn characteristics of the industry, to familiarize ourselves with fire safety legislations and international standards such as COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange), and to understand our client’s needs. Secondly, we had to take into consideration four different levels of user access depending on the role they have in a particular company. Eventually, redesigning the entire platform is always a big responsibility to clients and users - and we were ready to accept this challenge!

The solution

To build a good user experience, we have become experts in this field, expanded the functionality of our software, and presented convenient and reliable solutions in the mobile app and BackOffice for all user access levels mentioned above. Moreover, we have created a design system from scratch (including new icons, typography, components, and illustrations).

Main features

The data provided by our client demonstrated that users wanted to have an ability to customise some of the features. The limited functionality of the applications could not cover these needs fully. 

Thanks to our improvements, companies can now add the opening hours of each of their facilities, configure intervals and frequency of fire safety inspections, and assign responsibilities to employees.

Additionally, we have unified the data of the online, PDF & Excel reports, decreased the time for report generation process and made the reports more readable and easy to understand.  

On the part of the mobile application we have started to notify users about the availability of a new update and allowed them to use the TFS Compliance app in offline mode.

8billionideas is an e-learning platform for children aged 10-14. The main purpose of this web application is to help children to expand their potential. The platform offers various types of content such as videos, courses, and live experiences with the focus on three following areas: ‘Start a business’, ‘Career Passport’, ‘Level up”. 

While using the app, children have a possibility to track their progress, submit homeworks, and receive feedback from competent mentors. Moreover, parents can also follow the progress of their child and always check submitted works and comments left to them using their own dashboard.

Initially our company was invited to create a convenient and intuitive [web application](/services/web-app-development) for four types of users: children and parents as well as admins and mentors (in the latest release, we have also added two new types - partner schools and students). However, our main challenge was time, because the client wanted to launch the digital platform ‘8billionideas’ before the start of the next school year in order to integrate it with school curriculum in the UK. 

After the discussion with our client, we agreed on the most important features, expanded the project team, and divided the entire functionality of the application into stages according to priority - what would be developed before and after MVP. Using Scrum methodolodgy and working in two-week sprints, we have successfuly delivered in time the platform for children and their parents and presented the admin panel for admins and mentors. As a result, the 8billionideas client was satisfied with our work and has moved on in collaboration with Dev and Deliver [software house](/) which continues to this day.


Since our product is intended for several groups of users, we had to understand which difficulties each of them may face. Taking into consideration various age categories of the users and their different levels of technical knowledge, we suggest them two authentication methods: standard password authentication and innovative passwordless login via magic link. 

Thus, we have done our best to find an approach for everyone. At the same time, it was important to stick the general visual style and concept. In order to create an intuitive and simple interface for mentors and admins, we used our own unique components combined with Material Design library. This has helped us save time for [front-end development](/services/website-development) and [UI design](/services/product-and-ux-ui-design).

There is one target audience that deserves special attention: children. To provide a creative learning environment, we've dressed up the interface with bright illustrations and soft colors. 

But our main goal remained the same: to help our young users improve their skills and create memorable [user experience](/work/ux-ui-design). While working through courses or videos, a child can send a question to a real person using such a function as ‘Chat with mentor’ - and get a quick answer!

Futhermore, with the help of the Elasticsearch engine we have simplified search for study materials, so now the children can easily browse the library by choosing a topic, a type of content and applying filters.

One of the best features of the 8billionideas platform is interactive Experiences - online webinars that allow children to take part in learning activities guided by trained facilitators. Thanks to the in-app Mailchimp’s notifications the child will be informed in time about an upcoming event and won’t miss it.

Spark is an initiative portal where you can follow various ideas for your workplace, write comments to them as well as participate in different challenges. Our goal as a team was to create a [web app](/services/web-app-development) for employees to share their ideas on how to make things work better, look better or even feel better! 

We wanted people to believe that the greatest things start from a spark of an idea and we gave them an oppurtunity to share this within work community. For this purpose, we have used PHP Blade and Vue.js on front-end and Laravel on back-end side. The project was also prepared to be further developed in TypeScript.

Our task was to turn an already existing application into a special place where users would have a space to share any ideas ranging from more professional to more trivial. Main difficulty on the front-end side was an old, non-reusable, broad code which had to be reviewed and re-written. We were requested to make back-end, infrastructure and hosting changes as well. Throughout the whole work process, we were continually supporting the old Spark platform and CMS.


To solve the above-mentioned front-end issues, we have decided to implement the newest solution from Vue - Composition API. It turned out to be very effective, and we have successfully managed to transfer some old code to the Composition API. Thanks to this, we were creating a whole range of reusable components faster and easier. Moreover, Dev and Deliver developers have shorten the code as much as possible and improved its structure. Through this, the current product is technologically up to date and ready to be scaled up and expanded through TypeScript.

The flexibility was an integral part of the project, as different organizations require different solutions. Our application is intended to be a perfect solution for various types of organizations - like institutions or schools. Each of them can create their own user groups (e.g. teachers and students) to separate them and give an individual space for sharing ideas. This is achieved through the Admin Panel, where our clients can customize the app and adapt it to their needs. 

However, the old system could not handle some of the new functionalities anymore, so it was requested from Dev and Deliver to rebuild and reconstruct the existing CMS. To successfully implement all changes, our web app developers have expanded back-end operations and added new features to the Admin Panel. The tech stack we chose has helped us achieve our goals and make the administrative part of the application more accessible.

The main functionality is pretty simple: the Spark users can post ideas for others to interact as well as to interact with already published ideas. They can like, comment or mark as idea of interest. The best ideas get to be implemented.

The app allows for five types of users: User, Super User, Moderator, Innovation Officer and Chief Innovation Officer. The first being able to add ideas, like, comment and show support and the latter having full control over CIO panel, implementation process and actions regarding ideas.

Through dashboard, Chief Innovation Officer can track statistics on users activity, number of ideas and challenges or leader board. He can view ideas in progress, flag them or assign Innovation Officers to take on the implementation process.

With a built-in calculator, the IOs get an opportunity to create an estimation of potential bussines impact of the selected idea. The benefits can be adjusted to every organization needs. Later in the Gains section, the CIO can view amount of saved money through implemented ideas.

The Speeki ecosystem unifies several applications and supporting microservices that allow tenants to collect views, reports, and opinions from their employees, customers, partners etc. For a couple of years now, our team of specialists has been actively working on this product, expanding its functionality, adding new tools, and maintaining existing ones.

When the client came to us in early 2020, Speeki was known by a completely different name - ‘IntegraCall’ and at that time was only a whistleblower platform for safe and anonymous reports, so it did not have as many features and capabilities available to users as it does now. However, as the project progressed, the product evolved into a full-fledged, sophisticated solution requiring full-circle team involvement. 

Old designs

Among other improvements, one of the upgrades that our team had to make was the platform design which could no longer correspond to the level and scale of Speeki. In addition, our clients needed a rebrand for their business, so they turned to a third-party marketing agency for help. We knew that the renewed company style would also affect digital products, so we were ready to make the necessary interface design changes as soon as needed.

Back then, at Dev and Deliver, we started our collaboration with IntegraCall back then by supporting Java code and developing a new mobile app. Looking at the fruitful results of our work, the client had decided to trust our solid expertise and experience, and soon our short-term cooperation turned into a long-term working relationship. Over the years, our tech team (consisting of developers, testers, project managers, and DevOps engineers) has helped to scale and grow several Speeki products, while doing code refactoring, maintaining existing applications, and building new microservices from scratch.

At the same time, our product designers have been working hard to improve the user experience and overall usability of the platform. Moreover, after receiving a brand guide from Speeki (which included a color palette, typography etc), they have successfully implemented a new corporate identity in the existing interface and, based on it, created a highly scalable design system with universal components which Speeki could easily apply for further product extensions.

Feature Manager

As mentioned earlier, Feature Manager is a complex, custom-made administrative panel for the Speeki employees, thanks to which they can register new clients, enable or disable product features for the tenants, add licenses and many more. 

At the moment, all administrative activities are still being carried out on the old version of the platform. However, due to the outdated design and codebase, as well as old architecture, this tool has been in need of an update for a long time. In this regard, our design department has prepared a new visual solution of the platform. Soon we will start migrating the service to a new architecture and will present Feature Manager with renewed UX/UI.

Case Manager

Case Manager provides a single, convenient platform for any type of report from client users – whether it was sent through the mobile app, web portal or was transmitted by phone. As soon as a new report arrives, a tenant administrator receives an email notification. After that, he can start analysing and managing the report by adding another individuals involved in this case, defining a triage score, assigning case ownership etc. All these actions will eventually lead to further investigation of the situation and successful resolution of the problem. With Speeki, whistleblowers can be confident that their reports are taken seriously and handled discreetly.

Together with our client, we have turned the previous platform into a legible interface and introduced new product features to improve case management.

Web Portal and Mobile App

These are two applications that enable client users to make reports, participate in surveys, submit declarations, and so on. While using the apps, the users will be guided by the Speeki virtual assistant Nicole - an interactive Artificial Intelligence well-versed in capturing essential information to help whistleblowers answer all Reporting and Declare and Disclose questions. She will lead the user through all the compliance reporting processes.

Having built the new mobile app architecture, we have made this tool compliant, which means all sensitive data is encrypted and strictly protected. For added protection, our frontend and backend experts have implemented multi-factor authentication (MFA) in the mobile application and the web portal for the users who have an account on the Speeki platform
